Flooring waste factor by layout pattern
Typical industry planning values. These are typical planning values — confirm against the manufacturer’s install instructions and your product’s spec sheet.
Every floor needs extra material for cuts, off-cuts and future repairs. A straight or brick-offset lay wastes the least (about 5–10%); a diagonal lay adds angled cuts (~15%); and a herringbone or chevron pattern cuts the most (~15–20%). These are labeled planning values — confirm on your product’s instructions. Use them with the flooring calculator and the waste-factor helper.
| Layout pattern | Typical waste factor |
|---|---|
| Straight / brick-offset lay | 10% |
| Diagonal (45°) | 15% |
| Herringbone / chevron | 20% |
Labeled planning values. Straight lay runs about 5–10%; add more for busy rooms with many cuts, and buy at least one spare box for future repairs (dye lots change).
