Grout and thinset coverage by tile size & trowel

Typical industry planning values. These are typical planning values — confirm against the manufacturer’s install instructions and your product’s spec sheet.

Grout use depends on the tile size and joint width; thinset use depends on the trowel notch. The tables below are labeled planning values — smaller tiles with wider joints take more grout, and a bigger notch (for large-format tile) covers fewer sq ft per bag. Coverage varies by brand — confirm on the bag. Use them with the grout calculator and the thinset coverage calculator.

Grout coverage (lb per sq ft)

Tile size & jointGrout
12 × 12 tile, 1/4" joint0.10 lb/sq ft
12 × 24 tile, 1/8" joint0.06 lb/sq ft
24 × 24 tile, 1/16" joint0.03 lb/sq ft

Thinset coverage (sq ft per 50-lb bag)
