Flooring on stairs: treads, risers and nosing

A staircase is the smallest part of a flooring job by square footage and often the most expensive part by labor. Getting the material right means counting three things — treads, risers and nosings — and carrying a much bigger waste factor than a flat room.

The short answer

A staircase needs one nosing per tread, enough flooring to cover the tread surfaces, and — if you are cladding them — enough to cover the risers too. Each of those is a separate quantity, and none of them behaves like a room. Stairs are cut-heavy, so the waste factor runs 15–20% instead of the 10% you would use for a straight lay in an open room.

Count the parts before you measure anything

The classic stair miscount is treating treads and risers as the same number. They rarely are. A flight that lands on a finished upper floor has one more riser than it has treads — the last rise brings you up to the landing, and the landing is floored as part of the room above, not as a tread. A flight that ends at a separate top step has them equal. Stand at the bottom, count the horizontal surfaces you step on (treads), then count the vertical faces (risers), and write both down. Do not derive one from the other.

Then check the bottom step. It is very often wider than the rest — a bullnose or a flared starting step that wraps around the newel — and it will eat material and nosing out of proportion to its size. Measure that one separately rather than averaging it into the others.

Worked example: a 14-step staircase

A straight flight with 14 treads, each 36.5 in wide (3.04 ft), a 10.5 in tread depth (0.875 ft) and a 7.5 in riser height (0.625 ft), with the risers being clad to match:

  • Nosing: 14 pieces, 14 × 3.04 = 42.56 linear feet
  • Tread area: 0.875 × 3.04 = 2.66 sq ft per tread → 14 × 2.66 = 37.24 sq ft
  • Riser area: 0.625 × 3.04 = 1.90 sq ft per riser → 14 × 1.90 = 26.60 sq ft
  • Material before waste: 37.24 + 26.60 = 63.84 sq ft
  • With a 20% stair waste factor: 63.84 × 1.20 = 76.61 sq ft
  • At 20.15 sq ft per box: ceil(76.61 ÷ 20.15) = ceil(3.80) = 4 boxes

Note the trap in the nosing line. At 36.5 in wide, a standard 36 in stair nosing is half an inch short — useless. You order the 48 in length and cut 11.5 in of waste off every single piece, 14 times over. That is the kind of detail that turns a clean calculation into a second trip, so measure the stair width at the widest tread before you choose a nosing length.

Why stairs need a bigger waste factor

In a room, a plank runs most of its length before it meets a wall, and the off-cut starts the next row. On a staircase almost nothing is reusable. Every tread is a cut on both ends to a width of 36-ish inches; the leftover from a 48 in plank is too short to bridge another tread, so it goes in the bin. Risers are narrow strips ripped lengthwise, which means ripping waste as well as crosscut waste. And the whole assembly is visible from the side, so any piece with a flaw gets rejected rather than hidden under a sofa.

Why installers bill stairs per step

Because square footage tells you nothing about the work. Those 63.84 sq ft in the example are less than a small bedroom, but a bedroom is one open field and a staircase is 14 separate fitted assemblies, each with a nosing to scribe, a tread to template, a riser to rip and three edges that show. A per-step price is simply an honest unit for that: it prices the operation, not the area. Expect the staircase line on a quote to be a meaningful fraction of a whole-floor job even though the area is trivial, and expect a flared or winder step to carry a premium over a plain one.

When you build the budget, keep the staircase out of the room’s per-square-foot math and treat it as its own block: material from the calculation above, labor as a per-step figure from the installer. Drop both into the hardwood installation cost or general installation cost itemizer as an add-on so the total reflects reality.

Floating floors do not float on stairs

This is the rule people discover too late. A click-lock laminate or LVP floor in a room works because it is free to expand as one sheet over an underlayment. A staircase gives it nowhere to go and nothing to hold it: an unfastened tread will creep, click apart and eventually become a fall hazard. Stair treads are glued and mechanically fastened, full stop, and the matching nosing is what locks the front edge down and hides the cut end.

Some products are explicitly not approved for stair use at all, and installing them there voids the warranty even if it looks fine on day one. Check the manufacturer instructions for your exact line before you buy, because “the same floor, continued up the stairs” is a design decision the product has to support. What changes by material

  • Solid and engineered wood — the traditional stair surface. Retro-fit treads (a full one-piece tread that caps the existing one) are the cleanest route, but they are bought per step, not by the square foot, so the area math becomes a cross-check rather than the order.
  • Laminate and LVP — cut from plank, glued and fastened, finished with the matching nosing from the same line. Color matching between plank and nosing is why you buy both from one supplier in one order.
  • Carpet — measured by the running foot down the flight rather than by tread area, because it runs continuously over nose and riser. Waterfall installation uses less material than a cap-and-band; both need more than the flat-area figure suggests.
  • Tile — heavy, slippery when wet and needing a bullnose or purpose-made stair trim at every nose. Structurally the least forgiving choice on a wood staircase.

Landings and winders

A landing is a small floor, so it goes back into ordinary room math: length × width, added to the flat-floor total rather than the stair total. Winders — the wedge-shaped steps that turn a corner — are the opposite. Each one is a triangle with a different geometry, none of the cuts repeat, and the material for a set of three winders can rival five straight treads once you allow for the rejects. If your staircase turns, measure each winder individually as its own rectangle-plus-triangle and carry 25% on that section alone.

Order the whole staircase in one purchase

Stairs are the most visible flooring in a house and they are seen edge-on, in raking light, from below. A dye-lot mismatch that would be invisible across a bedroom floor reads as a banded stripe up a flight of stairs. So order treads, risers and nosings together, from one lot, in one purchase — including the waste and a spare piece. Keep that spare: a damaged tread is the single most likely flooring repair in any house, and a nosing bought two years later will not match. When the stairs meet the hallway at the top or bottom, finish the junction with the right transition profile rather than butting the floors together.
